HEQA

Coffee production in Indonesia is a 400-year-old thriving industry that’s weathered extraordinary challenges and has always come out on top. The microclimates are superb, and the volcanic earth is fertile, making it an incredible place to grow coffee. Like many origins, however, Indonesia also shares common problems in climate change, market volatility, resource accessibility, and consistency today. But there are people who believe in the potential for Indonesian coffee to go beyond what we’ve known for the last few centuries. That’s you, and that’s HEQA.

What is HEQA?

Redefining Indonesian coffee through science-driven innovation. HEQA's Bali-based production station is where research, sourcing, processing, milling, and exporting operate in harmony to bring out the best flavor qualities Indonesian green coffee can offer. Through controlled fermentation, HEQA explores the limitless potential of working with microorganisms to elevate coffee creatively, consistently, and sustainably–for both the natural environment and the producing partners in our community.

HEQA's name is rooted in ancient magic and the symbol of a shepherd’s cane, carrying on the legend of Kaldi the goat herder who unveiled the powers of coffee to the world. But what we do isn’t mystical–it’s microbial, pushing the boundaries of what coffee can taste like by revealing flavors that feel otherworldly, yet grounded in science and intention.

They chose Bali as their first base because the island’s coffee production has always stood apart from other regions in Indonesia due to history, culture, and flavor, with a solid foundation in modern infrastructure and eagerness for innovation.

Like them, we believe there’s more to discover—more to taste, more to imagine—and that belief fuels everything they do.

Innovation with Responsibility

For years, coffee has shaped Indonesia’s landscapes, livelihoods, and culture. Yet, today, farmers face an uncertain future — from climate change to volatile markets and resource scarcity. Quality, too, often struggles to remain consistent, making it difficult for Indonesia to take its rightful place on the world stage. HEQA was born to change that. HEQA believes science is not just about innovation — it’s about responsibility. By using microbiology to guide coffee processing, we’re creating a future where:

Farmers can secure stable livelihoods through fairer practices and recognition.

Coffee quality is elevated consistently, unlocking flavors that define a new chapter for Indonesia.

Global markets see Indonesia not only as a coffee producer, but as a leader in sustainable, science-driven coffee.

HEQA's Approach is simple yet transformative:

Harnessing local microorganisms to uncover unique flavor potential. ------ Partnering directly with farmers to strengthen community value. ------- Protecting the environment by using controlled, efficient processes and controlled waste management.

HEQA represents a shift — from tradition bound by limitations, to innovation grounded in responsibility. We’re here to prove that Indonesian coffee doesn’t just have history. It has a future.

A future where science and culture meet. A future where coffee empowers. A future where Indonesia stands tall.

“HEQA represents innovation with responsibility — science as a way to secure livelihoods, elevate quality, and make Indonesia stand out globally.”

From Basement to a Movement

It didn’t begin in a lab or a polished facility. It began in the basement of Chris’s house.

Three friends — Alican, Chris, and Jeremy — Alican with its microbiology background, Jeremy with its familiarity on Indonesian coffee doing coffee export and import, and Chris with his years of experience in coffee competiton — sat together and came with an idea of processing coffee: what if Indonesian coffee could be reimagined through science, and is there a way of elevating Indonesain coffee further?

That basement became the birthplace of HEQA.

Innovation with Responsibility became the guiding principle. HEQA wasn’t just about making coffee taste better — it is about reshaping the coffee industry.
